For Starz’s fans Outlander, it’s hard to think of anyone but Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser. The Scottish actor has won rave reviews for portraying the Scottish Gael and the man who passed the time Claire Fraser (Catriona Balfe). But when author Diana Gabaldon began writing the best – selling books on which the show is based, an actress was completely different in mind when she painted Jamie.
In a program of ‘Doctor Who’ Diana Gabaldon encouraged the writing of ‘Outlander’
In the late 1980s, Gabaldon decided to try novel writing. How she describes it website, she knew she wanted to write a historical novel, but she wasn’t sure how long she wanted to submit her story. Then she met the 1969 program of Doctor Who on TV.
“I was taken by a little character €” a young Scotsman from 1745, who appeared in his kilt. ‘Well, that’s getting,’ I said. ‘Yes, why not? Scotland, eighteenth century. she wrote. “That’s where I started, with no knowledge of Scotland no eighteenth century, without plot, without picture, without characters – nothing but the rather vague images attached by a man in a kilt (which is, of course, a very powerful and strong image). “
The actor who played the Scotsman Jamie McCrimmon in “War Games” has been named Frazer Hines. Later, Gabaldon said she reached out to Hines and sent him a copy of his new novel, telling him that his Doctor Who achievement had inspired Jamie’s character.
Frazer Hines wanted to make the TV series ‘Outlander’
After receiving a copy of Outlander (published in 1991) from Gabaldon, Hines immediately thought the novel should be turned into a TV series. At the time it appeared on UK soap Emmerdale.
“[A]after I kept track of it, I read her book and took it to my drama head at Yorkshire TV and said, ‘Listen, give me a year off from Emmerdale and let’s do Outlander – it will be very big, ”he said The Scottish Sun in 2017.
“I was still young enough to play Jamie at the time as he was almost 30 years ago,” he said.
Unfortunately, British TV executives downplayed the idea Outlander series, saying it would be too expensive.
The ‘Doctor Who’ actor later starred in Outlander
Although Hines was never able to play Jamie Fraser, he had the opportunity to participate Outlander when he finally reached the small screen in 2014. He was initially offered the role of Jamie’s grandfather, but declined because it was a non-speaking part. Instead, he was cast as Sir Fletcher Gordon, the governor of the prison where Jamie is imprisoned in season 1.
“It was great as I was done with Diana and Sam and they said, ‘We’ll get a picture of your two Jamies,’” Hines recalled.
