Carol Burnett Exhibition filled with funny moments and the team did their best to keep from breaking, but it was not always possible. One famous blooper left the stars and the audience in hysterics as Tim Conway went on and on with a rusty elephant story – and he broke Carol Burnett’s rule for the show.
Carol Burnett explained why she didn’t want the team to break a character
Burnett shared some of the details of that sketch in his memoir In such a good company, in which she explained in a chapter entitled “The Famous Blooper” why it was important to her that the team did not break a character. Unfortunately, sometimes that was not possible.
“Like I said, I never wanted to stop and recapture, because I like our show to be ‘live,’ so when the ‘Family’ sketches came in, I was sure that we break up in those scenes, because Eunice, Ed, and Mama were, in a strange way, sacred to me, ”she wrote. “They were real people in real situations, some of them as sad and sad as they were funny, and I didn’t want any of us breaking the fourth wall and being out of character. . ”
Burnett and the team couldn’t get through one sketch without losing it because of Conway’s funny story. “Then one week, in the eleventh season, Tim appeared as Mickey Hart, Ed’s non-stop assistant in the hardware store, and the family played Password, with Mickey as his partner. partner Eunice and Dick Van Dyke, playing a school board called Dan, as Mama’s partner, ”said Burnett.
“Eunice wants Mickey to guess the ‘rusty’ password, and give him the ‘laughable news. ‘Mickey responds with an’ elephant! ” Burnett recalled. “Eunice is obviously pissed as hell at this dumb response, and laments Mickey ‘s insults about his stupidity, as Mickey begins to explain why he thought the word’ elephant ‘was. ‘”
Burnett went on to share, “Okay, now it’s the early show and Tim, like the wicked Mickey, starts teasing about seeing an elephant. ‘laughable’ in the circus, and the trainer put it in a tutu, etc.. , etc., and there were rumors that they were lovers, etc., etc.. None of us had ever heard those lines until that prequel. The audience was sad, and saddened, so I was, after all sad about not breaking up in the ‘Family’ sketches! ”
“I wanted to not break a character on the 7:30 show,” she said. “Between shows, our director Dave Powers noted that ‘the story of the elephant will be different from the second show, and good luck. ‘Time. ”
Vicki Lawrence’s line put the actors off the deep end
In the first part of the clip from the costume preview, Conway tells the story of the elephant about a circus animal and the trainer to love it. Burnett tries to hold it together as a smile creeps into her face and as the camera pulls out to show the rest of the team, their heads down try to catch them. make up your own. The audience is in hysterics throughout the scene.
The second part of the video is the sketch meant for air and Conway launches a more interesting story about a Siamese elephant. It’s clear from the start that none of them are going to get through without laughing, with Conway starting to giggle as well.
Burnett continues at the end of Conway’s story, telling “Mama” that it’s time to turn around the game. Vicki Lawrence jokingly asks, “Are you sure a little is shining through?”
Lawrence Conway’s improved line sent off one end of the cup and Dick Van Dyke off the other, with Burnett losing it completely.
