Ahead of Am Bachelor on its first release on Jan. 4, the show released a teaser clip for the show featuring star Matt James leading the contestants in Christian Prayer. The prayer takes place the first time James speaks to the women as a group.
James then says that he uses prayer to settle himself in difficult situations, which is understandable when you are close to a dozen women on national television for the first time. However, Reddit users were sharply critical of this level, raising the question: How would viewers handle this moment if a Muslim, Jew, or Hindu person was leading the compete in the moment of prayer of the faith?
What Reddit users said
Different users in the Reddit thread He said it was not about Matt wanting to show how Christianity is important to him, but how he either accepted everyone that there was a Christian or he didn’t even think otherwise.
“It should be written in a more inclusive way,” said one Reddit user. “He has become at the heart of his belief system, and in a diverse group like this, where he doesn’t know many of them, he may seem a little insensitive or even arrogant. ”
Another commented that they felt strange about it just from watching the scene on their television: “I am Jewish. If I had been in that group I would not have been comfortable. I made fun of TV. ”
One Reddit starter commented that the show is “really trying to drive home that Matt James is just like the very white, very conservative, very religious audience they peddle to her. every year. ”
What other fans said about the moment
Superfan Brett Vergara, guest of the Baby Got Bach podcast, taken to Twitter to criticize the situation as well. “Don’t get people to pray with you,” tweet e. “There are people who are not Christians! There are people who are not religious! ”
Seann Am Bachelor, Pad Bachelor, and Bachelor in Paradise contestant Jaclyn Schwartz entered social media As well. “Okay but… are there any women in the Jewish group? ”She wrote. “Because that would make me a little uncomfortable. Pray without any choice should you participate? ”
Schwartz continued: “I’m not very religious, I accept that Matt had some criteria for sharing his wife in his faith. But I have questions! ”
There may have been a non-Christian competitor there. Check out the last season of Am Bachelorette – Ivan Hall, one of Tayshia Adam ‘s main Christian rivals, reportedly spoke of being Agnostic on their Fantasy Suite date (considered after the show on Kaitlyn Bristowe Off the wine podcast).
A Twitter fan commented on the situation as well, suggesting another option for James to show that he is a passionate Christian man: “Maybe he had introduced more … ‘I am a man of faith and I believe in praying over all situations in which I am I recognize that this may not be important to you but it is to me. If you’re uncomfortable, I understand but you may not be the right person for me ’and let them go. ”
Another fan argued that he had been blown out of proportion: “He is the Bachelor, and faith is important to him. He didn’t make anyone do anything. ”
James’ Christianity may have been at the heart of his description as’ The Bachelor ‘.
As this is James ‘first actual reality show, there is no doubt that the producers and editors are trying to tell the audience what James’ character is. While previous directors have had seasons to solidify their stories and narratives, listeners get to know James only from this show. And it is clear from program one that Christianity is a big part of what it does Old boy who he is.
