During the first season of Outlander, fans have seen Sam Heughan’s Jamie Fraser experience several difficult times. However, there was one minute from episode 6 entitled “The Garrison Commander” which stood out above the rest.
According to Heughan, this was the time for “Jamie to see almost everything. ”
Sam Heughan would love to watch his ‘Outlander’ co-stars in this intense season 1 program
The sixth program of season 1 stands out for a number of reasons. First, as Variety notes, most of the time “focused on two characters just sitting in a room and talking. ”It was a cat and mouse game between Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Black Captain Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies). And Heughan couldn’t get enough of it.
When he appeared at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2014, Heughan revealed that he “loved watching” the program just as a member of the audience.
“I was on tenterhooks; he just turns on his head all the time, ”said Heughan.
That intense scene took a week to film, starting with Claire meeting Lord Thomas (John Hefernan). Balfe said it was a “hopeful moment”, followed by Jack Jack Randall coming in to “stop everything.”
“But it’s great because it’s a real tete-a-tete,” Balfe recalled. “They’re just getting along and she can’t help it. That’s the good thing about Claire, she can’t help fighting back. Sometimes it’s not always the quickest thing but it makes it very interesting. ”
Caitriona Balfe compared the shooting of ‘The Garrison Commander’ to making a play
Because “The Garrison Commander” was such a long, intense scene, Balfe says it felt like they were doing a play.
“It’s just two people sitting and talking and it’s good we did it that way. For me, it was just such a powerful sight, ”said Balfe.
She noted that, in that scene, Claire sees that connection to her husband Frank, a physical object with which she was able to rub and grip. Balfe says, in that scene, Claire felt like she had to get through to Black Jack.
But just when she thinks she got through to her husband’s ancestor, the heartbreaking turn surprised Claire and Outlander fans.
Heughan was only part of two short scenes during the program, but they were both very important. The scene was the most intense at the beginning of the show, and Heughan wanted Jamie to miss almost everything.
‘Outlander’ star Sam Heughan says this memorable scene was ‘an important find’
It was the sad scene that showed Heughan at the start of the segment when Jamie got a brutal flogging at Black Jack’s hands. according to Express, Heughan said it was not easy to film the scene, but he was pleased with the results.
“It was hard work. It was freezing cold there – I think it was February, I had this blood clot, I was moved and hanging from the stage, ”Heughan recalled. “I wanted Jamie to lose almost everything, but he didn’t. Tobias, he’s going for it, it was wonderful. ”
Menzies agreed, saying it was “a combination of intense and very technical.” He said the scene had to be “a very visual, guttural display of violence” as Jamie’s experience and divisions are the drivers throughout the story.
“Their two lives are not the same after that, so it felt like an important thing to have, weirdness and mania no matter what the event. But it’s definitely a day where you have to really commit to what you’re doing, ”said Menzies.
