Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are famous for having 19 children and living by strict house rules. And those rules also extend to regression. When the older Duggars were growing up, TLC captured everything about their lives for the small screen. And this, of course, included their courtship.
Jessa Duggar is now married to Ben Seewald, and they have three children together. Before they got married, Ben had to ask Jim Bob if he could court Jessa – and it was really awful.
Jessa Duggar did not think Ben Seewald would have a romantic interest in her
Jessa and Ben first met thanks to their church. Although it was clear that the two were interested in each other from the beginning, Jessa was two and a half years older than Ben – and she suspected that this would be a major obstacle for him.
“He certainly would not be interested in an older galley, I reasoned, ‘”Jessa wrote in a letter to Ben Seewald Family Blog. “He’s a teenager, and I’m 20 already! ”
Of course, Ben didn’t care about the age difference. And he continued to learn more about Jessa and the rest of the Duggars. “Leaving the church that day, I had no idea I would see you again… but you would be back! ”Continued the letters. “Three weeks later, you reappeared at our church, after which my brothers invited you into our house to stay outside for an evening and have supper with us.” It wasn’t long after this when Ben asked Jessa to be in an official courtship.
Ben first asked Jim Bob Duggar if he could court Jessa
Ben knew he wanted to be with Jessa – and Jessa was ready to accept the courtship as soon as it was released. But Ben had one bigger hurdle: Jim Bob. Ben had to ask Jim Bob if he could court Jessa first.
“Jessa and I have been texting for you to know, unfortunately, and I really appreciate her and her character, and everything about her,” Ben tells him Jim Bob and Michelle in TLC section. “I was just wondering if I could – if we could – make it official, if I could ask her to make an official courtship.”
Jim Bob and Michelle then bring Jessa into the conversation. She told the cameras that she wanted Ben to ask her to go to court, but this was sooner than she expected.
“I saw this was taking too long, but I didn’t know it soon,” said Jessa.
Jim Bob made the courtship method very strange
Jessa was then ushered into a room with Jim Bob, Michelle, and Ben. And Ben had to ask Jessa if she could stand with him while Jessa ‘s parents watched and listened.
“I was just wondering if you wanted to make it official and if you want to officially court me,” Ben told Jessa.
“Yes,” Jessa replied simply. After a few minutes of silence, Michelle handed a cuckoo to her daughter while Jim Bob filmed the interaction on his phone.
“Hey, I’ll tell you what – you can go ahead and give it a hug if you want,” Jim Bob told Jessa. Jessa then went in for the hood with Ben, but it didn’t last long. “Thirty seconds,” said Jim Bob. Then, when the hook came in, he said, “Three seconds, I mean. ”
“A side hood is when two people wrap their arms around each other and hook each other from the side against the front hook to push them together on the face,” Jim Bob explained to the camera. “I think everyone can do that on their own.”
Despite how horrific this happened, Jessa and Ben were clearly expecting each other, because they are still together now.
