‘I Love Lucy’: Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s First Date

Ball and Arnaz first met after being dragged onto an RKO crane while filming Dance, Girl, Dance. However, this was not the first time she had looked at the actor. In her book, Love, Lucy, Ball said she first saw Arnaz when he was playing in the music Too many girls. According to her, he was very much a man of women.

“From the way girls treated him, Elvis Presley was his day,” wrote Ball. “Off stage was going around movie stars, stage stars, and all the major debutantes, including the beautiful Brenda Frazier. ”

Ball and Arnaz had their first date at a nightclub. However, instead of dancing the night away, they sat and talked for hours. Arnaz gave Ball a good idea.

“We went to a nightclub, but instead of joining the conga line we sat at a small table, talking and talking,” wrote Ball. “I might confess here and now I fell in love with Desi wham, brag! In five minutes. There was only one thing better than watching Desi, and that was talking to him. ”

Arnaz became rich, but ended up losing his wealth. He later came to the United States and built a fortune. “His family owned cattle rhymes and townhouses in Cuba,” wrote Ball. “Desi’s father, a pharmacist, was mayor of Santiago for ten years. His mother, Delores, was a famous beauty and one of the heirs to Bacardi’s rum fortune. ”

Things were going well for Arnaz, so that he had to flee Cuba at the time of the uprising. His parents’ home was burnt to the ground, and their cattle were slaughtered. His family decided to start over in Florida. Ball says she was moved by Arnaz’s story.

“As he told me the story, Desi’s eyes filled with tears,” Ball continued. “I started sniffing too, thinking about my own grandfather and how his life was ruined through no fault of his own. I knew just how Desi felt. ”

Ball said she was very passionate about Arnaz. She loved him dearly and wanted nothing more than to marry him and have children.

“I felt very needed in Desi,” wrote Ball. “Under that wonderful spell was a homeless boy who didn’t want anyone to care for him, worry about him, love him. And I wanted him and just him as the father of my children. ”

Unfortunately, Ball and Arnaz separated after 20 years of marriage. The former couple had a bit of a false start, but eventually they went their separate ways after Arnaz filed for divorce. Ball went on to marry entertainer Gary Morton and Arnaz married Edith Mack Hirsch.
