‘Friends’: The Real Reason Why Joey and Phoebe Didn’t End up Together

Most of the characters at Friends they fell in love with each other. But Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) never got there. There was a reason the writers didn’t want to couple them in the end.

Some fans wanted Joey and Phoebe to join ‘Friends’ together

The show started with six people just friends. But four of them fixed it and became romantic. This made writers lazy about making Joey and Phoebe a couple too.

“It would all have been too quick and complete,” Friends narrated writer David Crane Metro. “When it’s your goal to keep the stories of the six characters together, it would be very easy to go down that road but I think we all felt it would be a mistake.”

He went on to explain that the two couples also influenced the way their stories played out. “Since we had done Ross and Rachel we had to give Monica (Courteney Cox) and Chandler (Matthew Perry) another challenge,” he said. “So their journey on how they ended up together and babies was different. I think that’s the biggest challenge of doing a show for 10 years. ”

Ross and Rachel were apparently then with Monica and Chandler. Phoebe and Joey would not happen or risk the writers being too impractical for the audience.
