Former Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu has revealed that Music legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti came to her for a wedding in the eighties.
Onyeka published this new autobiography, titled My Father’s Daughter.
She said, however, that she rejected Fela’s suggestion when she visited his club because of his other wives.
According to her, she is a property lover and did not understand Fela’s love for women.
Describing how Fela proposed marriage, Onyeka wrote: “The second time I saw Fela was in 1984, a few years after my return from the United States. He had just been released from prison.
“He was arrested for trying to travel with his band for a gig in London worth £ 1,600 for their hotel. At the time, carrying any amount of foreign currency was against one of the many orders issued by the military junta of Buhari / Idiagbon.
“Following his release from prison, Fela sent a friend of his, journalist Onuorah Udenwa who is now a US-based minister, to take me to his club. I thought he wanted to thank me for speaking up for it, but he didn’t.
“He didn’t even mention the article I wrote in close association with him. Fela wanted to marry me, and I was ready. I thanked him for the honor of asking me to be his companion, but I rejected it all the same. “
The legend of the music said that while she was waiting for the club to see her, she noticed that her Queen (dancer wives) had looked at her with contempt.
“They often passed by, commenting on me. They were very hostile and very outspoken about it.
“I explained this to him and told him I was a property lover and would not be able to treat him as a harem app but Fela smiled.”
