Police Commissioner Hakeem Odumosu ordered that the case be referred to the State CID Gender Unit, Panti, Yaba, Lagos for investigation.
Baba Ijesha, 48, reportedly first assaulted the victim when she was 7 years old. The girl is now 14 years old.
On Tuesday, Attorney General and Justice Commissioner Moyosore Onigbanjo provided an update on the case.
Onigbanjo said the Public Prosecutions Directorate (DPP) had issued legal advice that a prima facie case had been published against Olarenwaju.
The council recommended that the actor be prosecuted under Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
Five charges will be laid against Baba Ijesha. Attempted under section 135 – sexual treatment of a child – can be punishable by seven years in prison; section 137 – child damage – can be punished by life imprisonment.
Others section 261 – sexual assault by going through – punishment with life imprisonment; section 262 – attempted sexual assault by going through – with punishment by 14 years in prison, and section 263 – sexual assault – with punishment by three years in prison.
“While the state would ensure that James’ rights as enshrined in the constitution are upheld, the Ministry of Justice would not make an effort to ensure that anyone who ‘sexual harassment to any resident of Lagos is taken lightly’, said Onigbanjo.
