Mavin Records CEO Don Jazzy has said he regrets not signing musicians such as Falz, Simi, and Teni.
Speaking at a Black Box Interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the producer of the album said that things did not work out between Falz and Mavin because the singer was connected to another manager.
He also said that losing Simi after the music cover competition he set up to select new artists did not put her out as a winner.
Don Jazzy also said he wanted him to sign Falz and Simi when the opportunity arose no matter what the situation was at the time.
However, it turned out that Davido was the only person he never wanted to rule.
“I can’t say I rejected them. For Falz, the working conditions were just not right. I run a company that could handle almost everything it needed.
“But I think it was like a management company that was already set up. It was like the Tiwa Savage ones but I had to grow into that kind of situation where I had to deal with someone who had a registration form, a blueprint process.
“I didn’t reject Simi. I ran a Twitter contest for ‘Journey of A Thousand Miles’. I loved her cover too because she was one of the participants but she didn’t win.
“I didn’t pick the winners. I liked it but you can’t sign anyone. That is one person I have repented of, I would not say repentance. But I wish we had worked on stuff together. Same with Teni. We would check each other out.
“I had not grown to the point where you moved from Atlanta to Nigeria for work. Now I can and we will work before we decide if we are going to sign. Before I knew it, people were rushing.
“She released records and I was like, ‘OK, we lost that one’. Three hot stars. The only person I didn’t want to sign Davido was that I didn’t want to sign him but I knew he was going to be really big. They already have money now, ”he said.
