For a Black cinema, the ’90s still stand out as one of the golden moments. At the time, filmmakers like Spike Lee and John Singleton turned their cameras on the inner city with films like Boyz n an Hood, Dead presidents, New Jack Chair, and countless others. But, until Set it, films focusing on black women were few and far between.
Based in LA and in Queen Latifah, Kimberly Elise, Vivica A. Fox, and Jada Pinkett Smith, Set If you are off follows four friends who decide to steal a bank in an act of despair. They are determined to put themselves in a better financial position.
The film was a play-by-play change for all the actors, including Fox, who credit Will Smith for helping her with her career.
Vivica Fox says ‘Set If Off’ changed her career
While Fox was already getting a progressive career when Set it debuted in 1996, his positions in Days of Our Lives and The young and the rest put it in a box. Until Set it, she was just getting caught up in careers as the beautiful girl, and she knew she could offer more than that.
“Before Turn it off, I was the hot chick. I was out all night, I was a model before, and I think people saw me a little bougie. Apparently, the uppity is a beautiful girl. Unbeknownst to me I grew two streets from the projects and I was, especially back then, as ghetto as the game, ”said Fox Vulture said. “So I got street credit. ”
From Set it, Fox went on to star in Quentin Tarantino’s Bill killed saga, 1-800- Required, and countless other projects.
Rosie Perez planned to play Frankie in ‘Set It Off’
At first, Fox didn’t even want to be a star Turn it off; Frankie’s career had gone to Do the right thing actress Rosie Perez. However, when Perez turned down the job, he opened the door to hear Fox, finally making history with the rest of the team.
The film was a resounding success with a box office earning $ 41 million on a $ 9 million budget. “I’m so proud of the director, F. Gary Gray, who 20 years ago when we made that film, he was really a sticker for believing the story,” said Fox Entertainment tonight. “He was so professional, he was just … we were throwing out pages, and rewriting him and making things work because he didn’t want us to regret it. ”
Fox also credits Will Smith for helping her get the job done.
Will Smith helped Vivica Fox get her role in ‘Set It Off’
For years, Fox had known Smith, after appearing on his hit sitcom Prince Fresh Bel-Air and opposite into Independence Day in 1996. It was Smith who helped Fox become a character for Frankie.
“Would I coach Set it in my trailer, ”she said. “He was going back to Jada at the time. He was just trying to earn points and it worked, Will! ”
