In its own history, author Charles Casillo argues that their relationship is best described today as an arrangement of “friends with benefits”.

But despite the steep nature of their romance, Sinatra had fallen in love with Monroe.

“Like many people, Frank Sinatra fell under her spell. He treated her like he had never treated any other woman, ”Casillo revealed to a podcast US Week. “It was very protective of her.”

And according to the podcast, he asked the blonde bomber to marry him several times, and she politely refused.

Monroe was once married to New York Yankees basketball vice-champion Joe DiMaggio. Their turbulent romance eventually led to the divorce, but DiMaggio never stopped loving Monroe. Until the day of his death, he would send roses to his wife’s grave every week, as she had once asked (according to The New York Post.)

He was so in love with Monroe that he was heartbroken to learn that she had started a new romance with the famous singer, Sinatra. (Sinatra and DiMaggio have been close friends in the past.)

Feeling so betrayed by the crofter, DiMaggio prevented Sinatra from attending Monroe’s funeral (as reported by The New York Times.)

According to US Weekly, Sinatra’s lawyer refused to allow the singer to marry Monroe. The reasoning behind it is somewhat destructive.

“He actually went to his lawyer and said, ‘I think I’m going to marry Marilyn,’ and his lawyer spoke to him,” Casillo said. The lawyer said, ‘Don’t marry her. She’s going to kill herself, and if she kills herself while she’s Frank Sinatra’s wife, you go down in history as the man responsible for Marilyn Monroe’s death. ‘”
