Melissa Gilbert is best known for her role as Laura Ingalls Wilder in Toilet on the Moor. She was also involved in an infamous relationship with Rob Lowe in the ’80s that was of interest to the public. But Lowe was not Gilbert’s first love. That was Cyril O’Reilly, whom she met while filming a remake of Splendor in the Grass. Melissa Gilbert and Cyril O’Reilly immediately had chemistry
It was the first time Gilbert had met O’Reilly when he did interviews for the part of Bud. Gilbert was immediately caught.
“From the moment I looked into Cyril’s eyes, I had a history,” Gilbert wrote the memoir. “The wind blew out of the room. ”
And their chemistry only grew from there. On the first day of the rehearsal, O’Reilly asked Gilbert if they could “get something out of the way” before he started and he kissed her.
“I felt a kiss somewhere deep in my abdomen and from there it spread warm and shone past the tips of my fingers and toes and through and out each strand of my hair,” she wrote. i. “It was like melting electricity.”

Gilbert had plenty of crushing before O’Reilly. But i Splendor in the Grass co-star was her first true love.
“Shooting the film was an amazing experience for me,” she wrote. “The love story was on screen, and then there was the even better romance of life that developed away from the camera. I fell in love for the first time. ”
When they returned to their normal lives after filming Splendor in the Grass, Gilbert and O’Reilly moved apart. Gilbert was getting ready for college and O’Reilly was “already a man.”
But Gilbert learned a valuable lesson from O’Reilly: “I learned that love can be as painful, as hard or as painful as it is miraculous and alcohol. ”
