Barker tried his part hand in attention in many ways before settling on his career as a television host. He trained as a fighter pilot during World War II, but later moved into a career in radio.
This caught the eye of Ralph Edwards, who was working on a game show called Fact or Findings. The presentation consisted of a series of questions in which the contestants had to answer or complete an activity in order to move on.
The show was a success. Around the same time, Barker occasionally tried his hand at acting concerts. One of his first non – radio gigs, which did not host, was a guest venue on Bonanza in 1960.
As the decade progressed, however, Barker became a larger presence on televisions everywhere. Like Dick Clark, Barker made a career out of hosting all sorts of television gigs.
His biggest role, however, came in 1972. That’s when CBS decided to bring back the engaging game show. The price is right. Barker was hired as the show ‘s guest, and for the next 35 years, he became the mainstay of the morning game show for people all over the world.
While Barker found other acting gigs, hosting gigs, and appearing after this, his main job was as a host. The price is right. Barker retired at the age of 85 in 2009, and except for television appearances since then, most have remained out of their notice. However, looking back on his career, he could not have been without his late wife, Gideon.
Who is Dorothy Jo Gideon?
Gideon and Barker’s relationship goes back to the 1930s when they met at the teenage Ella Fitzgerald concert. The pair dated for several years before finally saying, “I’ll do that,” in 1945.
For the next 36 years, Jo Gideon saw her husband go from a sought after radio personality to a bonafide television superstar. Gideon, herself, was a silly commercial singer and her voice was heard throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s.
From his early days with Fact or Findings to the beginning of Price is right, Jo Gideon was supportive of her husband. She encouraged Barker to slaughter and castrate pets at the end of each show. Unfortunately, tragedy struck in 1981. Gideon was diagnosed with lung cancer just six months before the disease took her life. A source near Barker said it was never the same after that.
“They were married 36 years, and her life was love,” the source told Radar. “He never married. He and Dorothy Jo had been together since the age of 15, and he told me, ‘I felt there should only be one Ms. Bob Barker. ‘”

Barker has been retired for more than a decade now, but at 96 years old, he has proven to be very sharp and mobile. In September 2019, the former guest’s photographers captured a game show at his wife’s grave, where he sat down, laid down a bouquet, and paid homage to his wife nearly 40 years after she passed away.
Barker is a legend in the eyes of anyone who has seen his work on display. However, behind the scenes, Barker had a woman by his side who guided him through his early career. Since her death, however, her legacy has been felt through her husband.
