When Hanks was just starting out in the entertainment business, he had to be strategic about how he spent his money. To better manage his finances, he came up with a clever trick to save money while living in New York City.

“When we were down to living on a heavy budget, however, it was time to go as a week of grocery shopping, we’d like to think,‘ Okay,… we have $ 45 here ,… What can we do for $ 45? ‘”Hanks said Graham Bensinger. “And whenever we bought something, I collected the cost, you know, and I never failed to feel good, because we would have a week’s worth of groceries, and I would have that. still – you know, i d get like 3 buckets back. … ”

Tom Hanks’ unemployment inquiry was rejected

While Hanks lived in New York City, money was tight. He barely scratched with it, and was getting unemployment from Ohio while finding out things. Unfortunately, once his bank did not think his check was valid and tried to make him wait for money.

“I had sold the car and a few things, and I had a bank account and I put the deposits down on a very dark and dingy apartment…” Hanks said. “So I was waiting for my first unemployment check to come in, so I was going from having $ 25 in the bank to almost $ 500 in the bank . … And I wanted to withdraw some money from there to buy food, and they wanted to wait to clear the check. … I’m not a controversial person, but I caused a stink. I said, ‘Look, I’ve got a baby that needs food, this check is from Ohio state! It’s great! ‘… ”

The bank manager eventually changed and let Hanks write a $ 50 check that he could get money right away.

Even if Hanks had a meltdown at the time, things would eventually come. Years later, after tremendous success Gump Forrest, the bank was turned into a Bubba Gump Shrimp Company.

“The main thing about that,… that bank, instead on the second floor of that building right now, was turned into a Bubba Gump Shrimp Company… so there you go, there ‘s a hard fate, strange thing there. ”

Tom Hanks moved to LA to shoot ‘Bosom Buddies’

After ending his career in the 1980 sitcom Bosom Buddies, Hanks decided to vacate his flat and move to Los Angeles. However, he quickly fell into a financial hole as he was unable to pay for flats in both cities.

“We had piloted it for Bosom Buddies, Peter Scalari and I, the show was sold out, I left and we tried to restore our New York apartment. And we went to Los Angeles with the understanding that we were going to go into production… but the actor ‘s strike came in 1980 and that closed. And I ran out of money. I couldn’t pay rent in LA and New York. … ”

Tom Hanks was so bankrupt that he had to borrow money from his representatives

Realizing that he was running out of money quickly, Hanks decided to tell his representatives that he had to leave Tinseltown and return to his apartment in New York City. Fortunately, he was able to stay in LA and keep working because his representatives gave him in advance to cover his bills.

“So I called the representatives… and I said ‘Look, I’m sorry, I don’t want to scratch things up, but I have to go back to New York because of the strike, and they said,’ Well , why didn’t you do that ‘will you ask us in advance?’ Is that allowed? I would not know how to do that. ‘Hey, I didn’t do any work, folks, but paid me a few thousand buckets. And they said, ‘Surely we would do that for you. … That was Tom Miller and Bob Boyett. The kindness and largesse made it possible for me and my family to be safe in Los Angeles. And to this day, if I ever run into Bob, I always get down on one knee and kiss his hand with gratitude. … ”

Today, Hanks ’financial situation is completely different. Thanks to blockbuster movies like Toy Story, Throw away, and Gump Forrest, Hanks net worth is currently at around $ 350 million.
