Tom Hanks Never Knows if His Acting Performances Are Any Good Until He Sees Them on Screen — ‘It’s a Cruel and Indifferent Fate’

Tom Hanks is one of the most decorated actors in the film industry. With two Academy Award-winning performances, there is ample proof why he is one of the best in the game.

However, Hanks himself never knows how he’s done in a role until the film comes out. Once he assumes he has performed well or badly, there is another outcome on the screen.

LOVE: Tom Hanks tells Toy Story that films are his hardest physical work ever – ‘You have to stay locked up instead’

Even though Hanks has 40 years of acting experience, he still grows anxious before every career. For him, it’s uplifting not to know what role he wants creatively.

“And as soon as I start a film, as soon as it starts, there is definitely – there ‘s the interesting element, but that element is dangerous. Are you going to be able to do it? Can you look at yourself? “

Tom Hanks can’t look at scenes he’s not proud of

A true artist, Hanks tends to be highly critical of his work in previous films. He doesn’t like to feel like he didn’t do so well in a movie, and he can’t even watch scenes that he feels he didn’t do well enough.

“I still watch films and I think there are times where I go like that [covers camera lens] over the TV or on the screen because I don’t have to see myself as sad. ”

Tom Hanks can never predict how his performances will turn out

Even with all his experience, Hanks can never tell how his performance will perform on the big screen. Later in the interview, he recalled the early days of his career when he sometimes thought he handled a scene well, just to be disappointed.

“This goes back to earlier days where you think, ‘Man! ‘You’re driving home at the end of the day, or you’re back at the hotel, you think,‘ Aw man, I cracked it today, man. I was damn good. I popped that scene, man. I had the conversation, I had the motivation, I was flexible, I crushed it. And then you see a movie and it’s very fat. Nothing works, nothing is real. … Happens all the time. ”

He also said that the same thing happens from time to time when it is thought that he did not implement a vision well, but that it was better than expected.

“And the other side is also happening. ‘I didn’t know what I was doing. I’m not sure if I even knew what that scene was about after we talked about it at the end of the day. I mean, did I even come close to getting there as I should? … And then it becomes one of the most amazing times in your career. ”

Overall, Hanks has learned to never accept what a visual product will look like before seeing the final result.

Tom says he won’t trust a director who likes the dailies

Hanks also knows better than to trust the opinion of a director who has just been watching dailies from the day before. Apparently, their word is not good.

“There is no verse or reason, it is cruel and hopeless, and you cannot accept that you have done it well, and you should not accept that you have failed him. I never trust any director who comes back and says ‘Oh, the dailies were great. That’s a good sight. ‘… ”
