In an interview with October 2020 with America Good morning, Kaling said of her new publication, “I was scared, because I thought, ‘Okay, I wrote all these essays before it all happened: the Black Lives Matter movement , the pandemic, the selection.
“I thought, ‘Are people going to think these are just light and funny, nobody wants to hear about this’ but what I have found is that people who read them are excited get some relief from the heaviness we are going through. And so they enjoy it. I’m excited about people reading it. ”
Kaling also noted that these new essays are still her most vulnerable and honest.
“They’re so personal and they’re so honest, touching on things I haven’t talked about in previous books,” she said.
