Moore married Richard Carleton Meeker as a teenager, and according to Trom, they started out as neighbors. In Moore’s book, Growing up again, she explained how Meeker was literally “the boy next door” when she was 10 years old. He worked as a cranberry sauce sales manager and was living in an apartment by himself when he first met Moore. And the fact that Meeker lived alone attracted Moore.

Unfortunately, Meeker and Moore were unable to work their relationship. They finally separated in 1961. “In the first year of Dick Van Dyke Show, because I was so happy and satisfied with my work, I was just as emotional at home, ”she wrote in her memoir, after all, People reports.

While Moore looked okay with her relationship ending with Meeker, it seems the feeling was not shared with their son. The couple had Richard Meeker Jr. a year after their marriage. As the couple canceled their marriage, their son started into trouble at school and spent more time with Moore’s mother.

As for why Moore wanted to marry Meeker at a young age, her home life seems to have had something difficult. Heavy notes Moore believed that a young marriage would relieve her of “a complex but protective, even totalitarian environment, my parents’ unstable home for the ‘wifedom’ and maternity adventures. ”

The revelation notes that Moore overcame her relationship with her parents in an interview with Barbara Walters. Although Moore understood her parents better as she grew older, she wanted independence from them at an early age. In the end, her passion for doing things on her terms was strong enough for marriage.

“I was going through a state at about 16, 17, 18, where I didn’t really enjoy them,” Moore explained. “I wanted to be independent, I didn’t want to be told what to do, and this young man I was very attached to and I think I fell in love as much as you can fall in love at that age… and I thought that was right. ”

Although Moore didn’t seem too worried when her first marriage came to an end, she spoke at length about how she felt about her son’s death. Richard Meeker Jr. died in 1980 at the age of 24 after courting his gun and shooting himself unknowingly.

Before his death, he had a very complicated relationship with Moore. Moore noticed that she was somewhat absent during her son’s childhood and always let him down. This led to his move with his father to Fresno, California, and the development of drug addiction.

“It simply came to our notice then. By the time Richie was 5, I had already let him down, ”Moore wrote in his memoir, according to People. “When he needed me more, I was busier and even more anxious than I was when he was an amazing kid. ”

Moore dealt with the horrific loss of her son as a result of psychotherapy. And finally she dug her son’s ashes into the Owen River.
