Mindy Kaling aspired to be a member of the team Saturday Night Live and her dream almost came true. While she was a writer on it The Office, she got the SNL lifetime offer – but things didn’t work out as she had hoped.
Mindy Kaling heard for ‘Saturday Night Live’
Kaling is in good company with other famous actors and performers who have been interviewed SNL but they did not get the job. However, she received an offer to write on the show and thought that this could lead to her being a member of the team.
There was one small problem: she had a contract as a writer and forward player The Office.
Her boss, The Office presenter Greg Daniels was willing to let Kaling go if it is SNL she offered her a job as a footballer, so when they gave her the opportunity to write for the show, sadly she had to turn it down.
In a 2019 interview with The Daily Beast’s The last smile podcast, Kaling discussed how she had to give up her childhood SNL dream. That was her second season of The Office when she was invited to auditions for a team Saturday Night Live and she really wanted to pursue the opportunity.
Her boss would be fired from her contract
Kaling had to have a heartfelt speech with Daniels, who at first did not understand why she would follow the test. Eventually, he took her out of her contract, but only if she came to a place in the team.
“I sat down with Greg [Daniels] and I told him it would be a dream for me to be a throwing ball on him Saturday Night Live. And apparently, you have a job here, I don’t understand why you would want to leave, ”she recalled. “And I said, I know, this is just my childhood dream.
“And he said, all right, if you go there and put it on Saturday Night Live, I will release your contract. So I went in and did interviews and after that I heard that Lorne [Michaels] I wanted to offer me a job as a writer there, but not as an actor, ”continued Kaling. “But there was an idea at the time that if I kept going long enough, like Jason Sudeikis, I would graduate to become an actor.”
“That hung over me, so I thought, well that’s interesting. So I went back and talked to Greg about it and he told me, no, that’s not the agreement we made, ”Kaling explained. “Our agreement is that if you get thrown as a member of the team you can go.”
“And it was really life changing,” she said. “I think the course of my career would have been very different if I had been away The Office and you did that instead. ”
In a 2007 interview with AV Club, Kaling shared the story about her SNL lab, which she thought “went well,” and how she really wanted them to accept the offer to write.
“Greg used to write to him SNL, and he knew that was going on SNL it was a big dream, ”she said, explaining that he would have let it break Office contract. “I hated LA for a long time, and I wanted to leave it,” Kaling said. “I had those fantasies going on SNL and falling in love with some writer SNL, of getting married and living in New York. ”
“It was heartbreaking for me to turn down, but then I had to write guests in the spring,” she said. “I really enjoyed it. I only got in one character in one little thing the whole time I was there, but it was a fun experience. ”
