Russell Crowe Thought the Original ‘Gladiator’ Script Was ‘So Bad’

Russell Crowe has forgotten several shows during his career, but few of them compare to Gladiator.

The film was a huge success and won several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Actor for Crowe’s performance.

However, despite the awards the film received after the fact, Crowe himself was not so happy with the Gladiator script when he first read it.

Crowe first commented on the script at the 2020 conversation with Jimmy Fallon.

“See, Gladiator this is a special experience, because their script was so bad, ”admitted Crowe. “It was just so bad, you know? It was like, ‘Ok, umm ”’”

He took a meeting with Ridley Scott after a bit of coaxing

Despite his lack of enthusiasm for the script, Crowe decided to meet director Ridley Scott at the request of the film’s producer.

“However, the producer didn’t know I could get a copy,” Crowe said. “But what he said was, ‘I don’t want to send you the document that we have, because you will not respond. He said, ‘But I want to encourage you to have a meeting with Ridley Scott. And this is what I want you to think. It’s 180 AD, you’re a Roman general, and Ridley Scott is leading you. Just think about that. ‘”

Russell Crowe was greatly influenced by Ridley Scott

Crowe ‘s view of the film changed shortly after he met Scott, who had a very specific vision of how he was going to make the film.

“So I went to see Ridley, and he was so prepared,” Crowe continued. “And he was so prepared for what he could show me and the visual and mathematical imagery that he didn’t have to build a whole coliseum, but still burn the coliseum. And we just clicked on that first meeting. So, you know, there was a little bit – there was definitely a bit of a risk involved at the time, you know? ”

Russell Crowe had a good feeling about ‘Gladiator’ after filming

After working on the film closely, Crowe felt that the film was going to be a success, even though he didn’t at first.

“Not on the first day, man,” said Crowe. “But you know, before I left the set, I was definitely feeling – the energy of that gathering was miraculous, you know? And you sit back and think about who was in that movie. “

Crowe himself thinks there is a big reason Gladiator so successful that every actor in the film delivers powerful, believable performances.

“It was like one of those things … Nobody was going around waking up at the camera… Nobody was going around doing that kind of performance where you get to experience the audience that you are in funny clothes… Everyone just lived in that world Ridley created, ”Crowe said.
