Nicole Kidman talks to Tom Cruise, power, and defense
In an article for New York Magazine The Cut, Kidman opened up about her relationship with Cruise. And, while she was reluctant to do so, she did gain some insight into what her marriage to Cruise brought. She said:
I got married very young, but it certainly wasn’t a power for me – it was a defense. I got married for love, but being married to a very powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I used to work, but I was still very much cooking. So when I came out of it at 32, 33, it ‘s almost like I had to grow up.
Cruises hold a lot of power in Hollywood. He is still a man of honor in the industry and someone who can complete the careers he wants. He gets the money he needs for whatever outcome he would like to see come to fruition. Kidman explained that her marriage to Cruise worked in her favor, as she was a bit “cocooned” from the negative experiences that young and other actors have.
Kidman manages her past experiences in her work
Kidman explained that although she was protected through her marriage to Cruise, that did not stop her from seeing the dark corners of Tinseltown. She said:
Of course I’ve had #MeToo times – since I was little! But do I want to feature them in an article? Will they come out in my work? Absolutely. I am open and raw. I want my knowledge and emotion to be used, used – and I’m not just talking about sexual harassment. I’m talking about loss, death, the full realm of life. But it must be with the right people so that it is not abused again.
