Toilet on the Moor star Melissa Gilbert and Brat Packer Rob Lowe was one of the most famous young couples of the ’80s. They met when they were both 14 years old, but didn’t start going back until a few years later. So what prompted Lowe to finally call Gilbert and ask her on a date? They made eye contact while driving down La Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles.
The day Melissa Gilbert saw Rob Lowe driving down La Cienega Boulevard
Gilbert wrote of her meeting in Hollywood with Lowe which took place on a “beautiful late summer 1981 day” in her memory, Prairie story.
“I was on my way to choosing a dress for an upcoming black tie gala,” she wrote. “I had left MGM after work and my friend Katie Daley was with me in my car. I turned up La Cienega Boulevard, one of the major north-south arteries. ”
Daley joked about Gilbert’s sunglasses.
“My umbrellas were big, red and heart-shaped,” Gilbert wrote. “I wore Lolita sunglasses.”
The girls laughed about the Toilet star fashion accessory when Gilbert noticed “this handsome man” in the car next to him. He looked familiar.
“My synapses were cracking when I tried to position it when it turned and I looked at it directly,” she wrote. “It was Rob Lowe. ”
“We had a fun, easy conversation and he asked me out on a date,” Gilbert wrote. “I said yes, and I don’t remember anything after that. That’s where we went or what we did. All I can remember is that I felt like I was hit on the head with a brick. I immediately fell, hopelessly, and suddenly in love. ”
The actors went back for several years and were praised by Lowe in 1986. After Gilbert became pregnant (and after rumors spread on both sides), Lowe told the Toilet an actor who was not ready to be a father or a husband and went their separate ways.
Shortly after their breakup, Gilbert had a premature birth.
“I had lost my baby and my relationship with Rob… and it hurt like hell,” she wrote.
