2020 may have been challenging for most people, however Mata McConaughey found a bright spot during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).
Matthew McConaughey and his mother did not speak for eight years
In an interview in October 2020 on Howard Stern Exhibition, McConaughey remembered falling out with his mother Mary Kathlene McCabe and had not spoken to her for eight years. Things started to fall apart as McConaughey’s star grew.
“I was calling my mother at that time after I became famous for needing to talk to my mother,” he said. “Because I was trying to figure out, ‘Hey I’m a little unfair here. Those things go. What do they mean? ‘”
He continued, “And my mother wasn’t the only one on the phone. Most of the woman on the phone was a fan of my reputation. And so I would have conversations and then suddenly, whoop, the things we are talking about will appear in the paper three days later. ”
“I was like, ‘Mum, that was between us… Don’t share that. This is something new. Loose lips can sink my vessel, ‘”he recalled telling her.
When his mother toured her childhood home on TV, he discovered that he had to stop sharing his life with her.
They found their way through the scene, as the actor shared, “We went through a time where I didn’t share much with her. She was always my mother but she became a different person. ”
He confessed, “no man is perfect” and found a way to forgive her. “I had to make some boundaries and it was a strong relationship for eight years,” McConaughey said. “We’re completely back now.”
“There was always forgiveness. I was just trying to pass my time, ”he said. “It was a difficult time… It was difficult for eight years, but we went through and we are on the other side of it. It’s good. ”
The pandemic allowed him to be closer to his mother
McConaughey and his mother worked through that difficult time and found that 2020, which has been a difficult year for everyone, allowed the actor’s mother to live with them and strengthens family ties.
In a quick clip of the Facebook Watch special Peace out 2020, McConaughey wondered how high the year was for him.
“What year have we been living through, one like no other,” McConaughey said. “One of my themes, theories and approaches is to get through hard times, when it is inevitable, to be related. ”
The actor shared how McCabe has lived with them during the pandemic quarantine, noting that it “strengthened” their relationship.
“I know in our family we got my 88-year-old mother who moved in with us and has been with us for seven months now,” he explained. “She will be around her grandmothers, her three grandmothers, every day for the past seven months to be something she will never forget. ”
McConaughey continued, “Something they will never forget. Something that has enriched their relationship and something we would not have done if we had not been quarantined. ”
