Six has caught fire for her new film

Music tells the story of a young girl named Music, a nonverbal child on the autism spectrum. Ziegler plays the titular character, despite being a neurotypical man.

Unsurprisingly, Sia faced backlash from the autistic community and several austistic actors. They tasted her for not throwing a true autistic actress into an autistic role and instead choosing a neurotypical person with whom she had a long-term working relationship.

Six was addressed Twitter by an autistic actor who said they would have acted in the film at short notice. “It’s just those excuses: excuses,” they said. “The reality of the matter is a great effort to get anyone who is autistic.”

Sia’s blunt response prompted even more backing. “F * cking bullsh * t. You have no idea f * cking because you weren’t there and didn’t see the film, ”she said before she finally delivered punch the gut: “Maybe you’re just a bad actor.”

As well, Music was criticized for the role of Autism Speaks in the creation of the film and Sia’s partnership with the group, which has been seen as abuse and betrayal. “They don’t have a good track record of showing respect for autistic people,” Forbes they said back in 2013. Among other things, critics of Autism Speaks argue that the group aims to cure “autism” – often by harmful and non-verbal means – rather than understanding it, and talking about autistic people rather than allowing them to share their own experiences and needs.

Maddie Ziegler was Sia’s favorite actress

Six has been a light rod of criticism, but Ziegler has also been criticized for even taking the role in the first place. Sia has in fact experimented with several non-verbal actors, including her neuroatypical friend who she is. claimed acting in the film was “too stressful.” Eventually, she chose Ziegler for the job.

“I tried,” she said. “It felt more lenient to use Maddie. That was my calling. ” She raised her views in an interview with Sunday Project in Australia. “I can’t do a project without it. I don’t want to, ”said the songwriter. “I wouldn’t be making art if it wasn’t for bringing it in. ”

Sia regrets that Maddie Ziegler cannot be protected from criticism

For her part, Ziegler was afraid to take the job, both because she had never acted before and because she did not want to offend anyone on the autism spectrum. Despite her neurotypical status, Sia said she was able to play a non-verbal autistic person perfectly in predictions.

The “Cheap Thrills” singer spoke to Ziegler about the production Sunday Project. “She shouted on the first day of predictions and was very scared and said, ‘I don’t want anyone to think I’m making fun of them. ‘I said boldly,’ I won’t let that happen, ‘”Six remembered.

“Last week I realized I couldn’t protect her from that, which I thought I could,” she said. “I understand that there are some things I cannot defend from what I try.”
