The world knows Desi Arnaz as Ricky Ricardo de I Love Lucy and husband Lucille Ball. Arnaz was a Cuban actor, musician, comedian and producer. He was born on March 2, 1917 in Santiago, Cuba and died on December 2, 1986 in Del Mar, CA.
Although he was one of the most famous people of his time, his daughter, Lucie Arnaz, says that there is something about her father that may surprise people to learn.
Desi Arnaz’s early life in Cuba
Before the Batista Rebellion, the Desi family was “on [Santiago] very folded. ”
“His father was the supreme ruler of the city,” Lucie told the Television Academy Foundation of her father’s family in Cuba. “His uncle was the police chief. His mother’s family founded the Bacardi Rum Company early on. ”
But everything changed when the revolution took place.
“The Batista uprising came in and overthrew Machado’s administration, which included his father,” she said. “They lost everything. They lost their homes, their cattle were slaughtered, their pets were killed, they were crushed and the piano and pictures of the whole family burned. ”
Lucie went on to say that her father was a lifelong learner.
“He’s done so many things in his life that it’s hard to describe my father,” she said. “He was very multi-talented. He took everything in stride and took great pleasure in finding out how he would do things. I really enjoyed that part. ”
What Lucie Arnaz got from her father, Desi Arnaz
Lucie thinks she’s acquired Desi’s good business sense.
“I think I’m a good business person, really, because I think the way it is,” she said. “If you don’t know, ask. And there are no silly questions. Hire the right people and let them do the work. He used to say, ‘If you don’t know what to do, don’t do anything,’ which feels strange but it ‘s been good for me in my life. It was very practical in that sense. “
In addition, Lucie has a desire for her father to survive.
“My dad has joie de vivre, which is the French word for Cuban sport,” she laughed. “He always had the love of life. And a good sense of humor, a funny twist.
