Keanu Reeves is not only a famous “nice boy” in Hollywood, but also a famous actor. Reeves has appeared in some big budget blockers like Am Matrix franchise, Astar, John of Wick, and Constantine.
While he has appeared in many hits, he has also been on the line of films that have fallen under the radar in recent years. One of those dark comedy films in 1997 that saw Reeves starring one of the greatest legends in the screen – an actor who inspired Reeves so much that he gave him a big pay cut to get a chance to work with him .
Keanu Reeves became famous in the nineties
Reeves was born in 1964, and was a multicultural youth, living in Lebanon before moving to Canada. It was in Canada where Reeves began acting, appearing in several television programs and films made for TV.
Reeves was able to break into the big time in the late eighties, with roles in films such as Youngblood and Bill & Ted’s brilliant adventure.
In the early 90s, Reeves had grown to become a Hollywood star. Although his work was not always praised by critics (as in the 1992 horror gothic film) Dracula Bram Stoker), Reeves and his unique brand of density and charm were appreciated by audiences.
After appearing in the action movie Astar, Reeves rose to the next level of stardom and was in demand in appearing in everything from romantic comedies to action blockbusters.
Keanu Reeves starred alongside Al Pacino in ‘The Devil’s Advocate’
One of Reeves’ most interesting films was the 1997 release, Devil’s Advocate. The film tells the story of a young lawyer who was growing up in Florida, in search of a high-powered career. When he gets a great job opportunity in New York City, he willingly accepts it – even though he notices some weird things about his new business partner, the smooth John Milton. As time goes on, Reeves’ character begins to realize that Milton isn’t everything he wants to be.
Directed by Taylor Hackford, Devil’s Advocate critics received good reviews. Many commentators and fans praised Reeves ’performance in the film, as well as the visuals and artwork.
However, one other actor in the film received equally clear reviews, and that was the actor who was playing Milton – the legend of the screen, Al Pacino.
Did Keanu Reeves take a pay cut to work with Al Pacino?
Al Pacino has been an expert for decades, ever since he made history in history The Godfather. By the mid-nineties, going around, Pacino was known as an icon for audiences around the world, one of Hollywood’s most respected actors.
So it’s no surprise that Reeves jumped at the chance to work with Pacino. According to a report, when Reeves was early in the production process for Advocate of the Devil, while Pacino ‘s name was mentioned, he sincerely suggested that performers try to hire the former actor.
In fact, Reeves voluntarily said his own salary would be cut by millions of dollars to allow producers to hire Pacino for John Milton ‘s role. Pacino eventually accepted Milton’s role, and although Reeves was paid much less than he would have otherwise, he was offered the chance of a lifetime – the opportunity to work with one of best actors in the acting industry.
Fans certainly appreciated the work promised by the duo on screen, and even to this day, Devil’s Advocate stands as one of Keanu Reeves’ most interesting films.
