Kate Winslet Was Told To ‘Settle for the Fat Girl Parts’ in Hollywood

Kate Winslet is one of the most successful actresses of our time. But before she could find fame and fortune, her peers bullied her. Not only did her classmates bother her for wanting to be an actor, but her teachers did as well. They said to the Titanic a star she wouldn’t be able to do in Hollywood if she wasn’t willing to “play the parts of a fat girl.”

But because of Winslet’s determination, she refused to listen to those negative comments. Now, she has over seven Oscar nominations under her belt, and is thriving as an actress.

Kate Winslet was told she would never do it in Hollywood

Winslet tackled bullying as a child because she wanted to be a star. Her peers smiled at her, saying it would never happen because she didn’t look like the usual Hollywood beauty in their eyes. Because she was obese as a child, children would make fun of her and say she didn’t belong on the red carpet because of her size.

“I was bullied at school,” Winslet admitted at a UK charity event (Via Vanity Fair.) “They named me Blubber. Mocking me for wanting acting. I locked in the cupboard. Mocking me. ”

And as Winslet said Vanity Fair in 2008, she couldn’t have been famous as a celebrity when she was younger because none of the actresses were like her.

“I was obese,” she told the youth magazine. “I didn’t know any famous fat actresses, and I have never seen myself in that world, and I’m very serious. You know, once you are obese, always an obese baby. Because you always think you are just looking a little wrong or something a little different from everyone else. And I still have that. “

Kate Winslet’s teacher told her not to get involved as she would only be thrown as a ‘fat girl’

According to Winslet, in her charity speech, she refused to “lock her dream away.” Instead, she was actively “fighting back” to become the actor she always wanted to be. “I had to ignore the negative comments and I had to believe in myself,” she said.

Winslet continued: “I had to choose to rise above all else, and I had to work hard. You just have to be more discriminating with the help you render toward other people. And sometimes that’s the hardest part. ”

And fortunately, her fight came to fulfill her wildest dream.

“One day, I was thrown in like a Rose Titanic,Winslet said. “The most unlikely candidate – Kate from the sandwich shop in Reading – suddenly works in one of the greatest films ever made! You can be from anywhere, and you can do anything, believe it. It is able to overcome your fears. “
