Julie Andrews will be forever Mary Poppins and Maria from The Sound of Music, but one should not forget that it also has a witty side.
A major staple in television, music theater, and animated family movies, Andrews once told Ellen DeGeneres that she loves every word of oath and will easily drop a bomb-s in the right conditions.
Andrews was also a longtime friend of the late Carol Burnett, and the two celebrities worked and played together, sometimes finding themselves in the middle of hijinks. The actress recently shared a story about when the two pulled an unexpected gag on a first lady.
Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett kissed as ‘prank’
Andrews appeared on it Kelly Clarkson Show to talk about her work with Walt Disney, her career, for some fun with her daughter. During her conversation with Clarkson, she was asked about a drink she pulled on the first lady with Carol Burnett.
Andrews explained that the whole story is too long to tell, but said she and Burnett were at an event waiting for one of their friends to arrive. Time passed so they decided to meet him at the hotel terrace. This turned out to be a packed site for a unique event: Lyndon B. Johnson’s inaugural performances.
Andrews said the hotel was full but at the time, things were quiet, and she and Burnett were positioning themselves on a sofa in front of the elevator. One of them suggested they should be silly and let them kiss when their buddy Mike stopped.
“The elevator went to ping and we thought it was Mike, and the doors opened and that elevator was just full of secret people,” Andrews said. She said he would keep “going on and on” and people other than the friend kept walking out, while the two friends kept accepting the fool.
Andrews and Burnett thought they blew up the first famous woman
Andrews said after a while, a woman went off the elevator. Although she first walked down the hall, she turned around after recognizing the pair. “Carol swears it was Lady Bird Johnson,” she said.
“She came back and by this time, Carol was laughing so hard that she went around behind the sofa we were sitting on as we both had tears running down our cheeks. faces to be so silly. ”
Andrews said the lady looked over the sofa and politely asked, “Excuse me, are you Carol Burnett? ”
Burnett replied, “Yes, and here is my friend Mary Poppins!”
Andrews and Burnett had a relationship for decades
Fans may remember that Burnett and Andrews collaborated as actors many times between 1962 and 1990. Their connection expanded beyond work, and the two were friends for 50 years. Burnett was even the goddess of Andrews child.
Andrews once said Oprah Mag she and Burnett were quite a rascally paired. “Oh my gosh, yes, she’s so good! And you know, I’m the bad girl when we come together, ”she said. “She’s making fun of me, and she’s the quiet one. It’s very funny. ”
