Although inspired by his sister, and one of his best friends, Yara Shahidi, Smith revealed that Kid Cudi is his favorite musical artist of all time. He told Hot 97,

Then I got older and started going to festivals and then I realized, oh man, everyone feels that way from Cudi. Everyone says Cudi saved their lives. … Everyone had the same experience listening to Cudi. If anyone was listening to Cudi, you knew about it. You could say specific things about them.
Kid Cudi has persuaded Smith to study his music and study the artist who inspired the Ohio-born rapper as well.
