Inside Will Smith and Eminem’s Feud

Eminem as a stranger to having fun with other celebrities. Throughout his career, Marshall Mathers has called everyone out from other rappers to popstars to actors.

One of the most famous cows was that of the expert Will Smith. Many fans remember that Em figured Smith to release it in an acceptance speech at the MTV VMAs. But according to DJ Jazzy Jeff, there’s more to the story going back years before Smith ever talked about not swearing in his videos. Here is what he says went down that not many people knew about.

Will Smith’s acceptance speech ran to Eminem in the wrong way

It started (or so we thought) at the 1999 VMAs when the “Miami” artist defeated rapper “My Name Is” in the Best Male Video category. When accepting the award Smith stated that he never had to curse any of his songs in order to collect hardware.

Eminem took that as a personal dig as Lenny Kravitz was the only other artist in the category for the song “Fly Away” and “Livin ‘la Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin, and none of them mention include any shows.

It should be noted that Eminem took home the award for “The Real Slim Shady” in the same category next year. But in ’99, he was less pleased with Smith ‘s words and decided to respond with diss.

Eminem did his best and gave Smith a few shots. He hit back in “The Real Slim Shady” with the lines: “Smith won’t have to cuss to sell records / Well, I will / So f * ck him. And f * ck you too. ”

The rapper “Lose Yourself” mocked the “Independence Day” actor by making a name in the music video “Forgot About Dre. In one part of the video, the music stops and Eminem reportedly tells the narrator’s character: “Yeah, I just know I’m upstairs and I’m listening to my Will Smith CD and I saw all those flames. ”

The controversy continued when Smith decided to shoot back at Em in his 2005 song “Mr. Good Guy. ”

“Mr. Nice Guy, relationship counselor… Light on the juices, priceless smile… Look into the eyes, he got an eye… Of a survivor, a man, a father… Dissed by Eminem but it didn’t bother him… Yup well he classy… Big Will just get another 20 mills walking past E… I’m really nice why I’m being bullied, huh! ”

There’s more to the story according to DJ Jazzy Jeff

Years later, buddy Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff aka Jeff Townes, let fans in on a little secret by appearing in interview with Montreality that Smith and Eminem met and talked years before their sex began. Townes explained that it is possible that Em did not value Smith’s feedback highly at that time.

“I was a huge fan of Eminem, especially with his early products,” Townes said. “I just kinda reached out to him,‘ Yo man, big fan. They would like to make some stuff. ‘And it ended comin’ to Philly and we went into the studio, and we got rid of some things. ”

Townes continued, “It was crazy because that was one of Will ‘s most time in town. Will walked into the room, and I think I played ‘Just The Two Of Us. Will listened to him, and Will looked at Eminem and said, ‘You’re the second one to be the biggest flop in hip hop, or you’re the biggest we’ve ever seen there an hip hop. And Eminem never forgot that. ”
