Ina Garten Swears By This 1 Ingredient to Give Her Recipes ‘an Edge’

Ina Garten has a lot of tricks up the aisle when it comes to cooking, but there is one ingredient she knows that will always give her an “edge”. While many people keep this item in their pantry, Garten has good reason to cool it.

Ina Garten states that this ingredient ‘wakes everything up’

In an interview in September 2020 with Food & wine, Garten revealed a really tried ingredient and says it uses a lot when a recipe requires “fringe.”

“For anything I do, if it’s like a little shower of grapes, it just fringes and awakens everything,” Garten explained. She does not seem to throw in grapes all dish she serves, but where it makes sense, the chef discovers that the acidity of grapes is a nice addition.

Garten also revealed that she keeps all kinds of grapes ready, such as red wine, balsamic grapes, cider grapes, and champagne grapes. Garten also keeps grapes in the refrigerator – it has its reasons, though.

“I keep them in the fridge,” she said. “I know a lot of people keep them in the pantry. I may take hell for this, but I find they don’t develop bacteria in the fridge. ”

One Ina Garten ingredient is absolutely hateful

While she loves grapes in many of her recipes, there is one ingredient she doesn’t use because of how bad she is: cilantro.

During an interview with 2017 by Munchies: Am Podcast, the interviewer asked the chef, “Is there anything you hate that you will never find in one of your cookbooks? ”

Garten had an answer before the question came to an end. “Cilantro. Hate it! ”She said. “I know people like it, you can add it to the recipe. I hate it. For me it’s so strong – and it tastes like soap to me – but it’s so strong that it gets the upper hand over all the other flavors. ”

Instead Garten enjoys food that offers delicious treats. “I like something that tastes interesting, but as you eat it you get the layers, you know, the straw, some orange juice, some sweetness, some yoghurt,” explained the chef. “You get all these flavors in balance. But when cilantro is in something, that’s all I can taste. Everything else will go away. ”

Garten is passionate about making a simple homemade dress and showed off an easy recipe in 2017 PBS News Hour break up.


  • 3 tablespoons of Champagne grapes
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh garlic mince
  • 1 extra large egg yolk, room temperature (optional, but if you leave the egg, use extra mustard)
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup olive oil

Whisk together the grapes, mustard, garlic, egg yolk, salt and pepper. Once they are put together, slowly add the olive oil while whistling regularly to decorate the dressing.
