Ina Garten makes cooking easy, but she once admitted that things are not as they seem. The celebrity chef shared in a 2017 interview with PBS NewsHour that cooking is “so hard” for her and that plays a part in her development of recipes and cookbooks.
Ina Garten has a challenge
Garten has proven she is up for a challenge, starting with the decision to buy the Barefoot Contessa specialty food store when she had no experience in the food industry.
The former owner of the store helped with the move, but Garten admitted she felt very lost when she first started and conveyed her concerns to her husband Jeffrey.
In an interview with Munchies: The Podcast, Garten remembered how her first days at the store left her with doubts. “At the end of the weekend, I said to Jeffrey, ‘This is the silliest thing I’ve ever done. This is the worst summer of my life and I will never learn this business, ”she said.
Jeffrey found the perfect words of encouragement. “He told me, which was very smart, he said, ‘If you learn the business in a week, you’ll be bored in two weeks,'” she recalled. “And he was right.”
“Since then it was like this big sandbox,” she said. “There was always something interesting to do.”
Ina Garten acknowledged that cooking is challenging
Although she looks like a kitchen pro, Garten admitted during PBS NewsHour an interview that cooking doesn’t come easy for her and that’s part of why she develops recipes that appeal to newcomers in the kitchen.
When asked if she was a chef before buying the specialty grocery store, Garten said, “No, I never worked in a store. I never worked in a restaurant. ”
While she said she was cooking at home, Garten said “that’s not the same thing,” explaining, “I taught myself how to cook while working in Washington. use of Julia Child cookbooks. ” Garten had no formal training but learned how to be an amazing chef.
She published her first cookbook in 1999; all of his cookbooks offer affordable recipes for a very personal purpose.
“I think I had a very clear vision when I started writing cookbooks – something I wanted it to be,” she explained. Garten hoped the reader would look at her recipes and say, “I can do that and I can do it with the ingredients I find in the grocery store. ”
“When I first started writing cookbooks I remember thinking to myself, ‘What makes me think I can write a cookbook?’ ”When she compared her experience to professional chefs. She said, “And as I started I really realized what I really needed because I could connect…”
“Cooking is hard for me. It’s so sad for me, ”she explained. “Anyone who works with me will tell. It’s so hard for me and that’s why my recipes are so simple, because I want to be able to make them. ”
