‘I Love Lucy’: Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball Fought Over a Work Trip That Took Too Long

I Love Lucy stars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were above hills in love. The couple married from 1940 until they divorced in 1960. Ball described a major fight she had with Arnaz that made him “hopping mad” after taking her home too long from a work trip.

Ball ‘s career was beginning and she had to leave New York and travel to the Midwest for a few media shows. She and Arnaz kept in touch via telegram and phone calls. In her book, Love Lucy, A Member said that one telegram in particular reduced her to tears. In the message, Arnaz told her he loved her again.

This was a difficult time for the couple as they had earlier decided they could not marry. Member said they approached life differently and traveled too much to make the relationship work. Arnaz also signed a contract with RKO that said he could not marry for five years.

Desi Arnaz was angry that Lucille Ball took so long to come home

Ball’s trip to Milwaukee took longer than expected. Instead of one day, the trip stretched to five days, delaying her trip back to New York. Before she received the news that her trip would be postponed, Arnaz called Ball and asked her to promise to return to New York so they could talk about their relationship further. However, things did not go as planned and Arnaz was not so happy.

A snowstorm caused Ball’s co-star Gloria Jean to disappear. As a result, RKO executives asked Ball if she would extend her visit. Arnaz was so upset that he would make an angry call to Ball every night and ask when she would return to New York, according to Ball.

At one point, Arnaz accused Ball of initiating a romantic relationship with another man. He suspected she was going around an actor named Joseph Cotton. Ball said Arnaz thought there was a “big deal” going on between them and she paused so she could spend more time with Cotten.

Ball said she didn’t even know who Cotten was because she was too busy with work for awareness. She said she was “going crazy” after that phone call. After hanging out, she said she looked up to see Joseph Cotten in the hotel lobby. He walked past her. To her surprise, he stayed at the same hotel.

The I Love Lucy The actress decided to rush back to New York so that she could make things smooth with Arnaz. She said Cotten was still in the lobby when she came downstairs and was kind enough to drive her to the airport.

Why Desi Arnaz was crazy about Lucille Ball’s trip

Ball went to New York and stayed at the hotel for him. When they met again in the evening, she found out why Arnaz was so angry with her. A member stated that he intended to run away with her. He had to put it off five times and was getting upset with every delay. The couple married the next day, November 30, 1940.
