John Krasinski is best known to fans for his work in comedies such as The Office and dramas such as Quiet place. But before taking on the role of Jim Halpert and breaking into the world of acting, Krasinski needed help from an unlikely connection – actor and film director John Carroll Lynch.
John Krasinski never thought he was capable of being an actor
During an interview on the Off camera by Sam Jones podcast, Krasinski talked about engaging in improv acting in college. Ironically, Krasinski thought he was going to play basketball when he went to Brown University. But when he saw their basketball team at work, Krasinski immediately felt he could not play among the already talented team.
Instead, Krasinski was added to the Out of Bounds sketch comedy list. Finding that they were very much on campus, Krasinski interviewed and got inside.
“I was just looking for a group of people and [Out of Bounds] everything changed, ”Krasinski admitted. “Through college, I never wanted to be an actor. I never thought it was possible to be an actor. ”
Eventually, Krasinski realized that he had a keen interest in acting. But before he caught his big break, he needed a little help from a family friend.
John Carroll Lynch is John Krasinski’s ‘fake uncle’
After college, Krasinski decided to implement his own. He made an agreement with his mother, who asked him to follow his dream for a certain time. If acting didn’t work out for him after three years, Krasinski would have to pursue another career.
Finally, Krasinski decided it was time to find a surrogate. Unfortunately, he found it difficult to find a representation. Just as he was about to be released, Krasinski’s “false uncle” came to the rescue.
“I say pseudo because of [he’s] my aunt’s sister-in-law, ”Krasinski explained. “So it’s like my aunt married this man called John Carroll Lynch,” he clarified. “[He] one of my favorite actors ever. He has done it all since Zodiac to Gran Torino, Drew Carey’s brother played him Drew Carey’s presentation. ”
Just as Krasinski was about to throw in the towel, his mother persuaded him to go to Carroll’s Christmas party. “That’s family – you don’t say‘ no ’to a family party,” Krasinski recalls his mother saying. “Don’t be rude.”
That party would change Krasinski’s role forever.
John Carroll Lynch helped John Krasinski find a talent manager
Krasinski ended up attending the Carroll holiday event, his trade reel in tow. When Carroll saw Krasinski ‘s work, he persuaded his manager to call him when he arrived in New York City.
Unfortunately, Carroll ‘s manager was less willing to represent Krasinski, but they offered him five meetings with prospective managers. In his fifth meeting, Krasinski won his first pilot.
“It wasn’t The Office – this pilot was just before The Office,”Krasinski said. “When [the pilot] failed, I remember it being like, ‘Well that’s it. You will only get one picture. I’m dead. It’s over. ‘”
Ready to take it in, Krasinski called his mother and told her it was time to give up acting. Krasinski said it was November when he called her, and fortunately she advised him to “cycle out this year. ”
Three weeks later, Krasinski received the call about interviews The Office. To this day, he has Carroll – and his mother – to thank.
