Ina Garten fans love the Barefoot Contessa show and their cookbooks and are also struck by her sweet relationship with her husband Jeffrey. How did Ina and Jeffrey meet and how long were they married?
Ina and Jeffrey met when they were teenagers
Ina met Jeffrey while visiting her older brother at Dartmouth University in 1966; she was just 15 years old and Jeffrey was 17 at the time.
According to an article in Food Network Magazine, Jeffrey saw Ina from the college library window and said to his living room, “Look at that girl, isn’t she beautiful?” It occurred to his roommate that she was a friend’s youngest sister and that she had a date that night. They did not click, but Jeffrey knew he wanted to meet her and wrote her a letter. He knew who she was, telling the Food Network, “She looked very smart and looked nurtured. She looked like she was paying attention to me. ”
They went on their first date months later, but Ina said “It was an accident” when they tried to go to a bar. They saved the date by having a “good time” at a coffee shop. Jeffrey continued to send her letters. “He wrote to me, like every day. I couldn’t keep up! ”Said Ina.
They continued to attend while attending Syracuse University and successfully navigating their long distance relationship.
How long have Ina and Jeffrey Garten been married?
As of 2020, Ina and Jeffrey Garten have been married for over 50 years, as the couple tied the knot on December 22, 1968.
They were married at a romantic winter wedding in her parents ’Connecticut home. “Just in the middle of the ceremony, it started to snow,” she said People in 2017. “It was beautiful and romantic, but before the end of the party, the poor boys had to dig out everyone’s car parking! ”
Jeffrey reassured Ina with the perfect advice when she needed it
Jeffrey has been Ina ‘s biggest supporter during their long marriage and she throws some light on how it boosted her confidence when she was once skeptical.
She bought the Barefoot Contessa specialty grocery store in Westhampton in 1978 and wasn’t sure if she could give it a try.
During an interview with 2017 by Munchies: Am Podcast, Ina explained that her first few days running the store were awful.
“At the end of the weekend, I said to Jeffrey, ‘This is the silliest thing I’ve ever done,’ she recalled. ““ This is the worst summer of my life and I will never learn this business. ”
“He told me, which was very smart, he said, ‘If you learn the business in a week, you get tired in two weeks,’ ‘Ina said. “And he was right.”
“Since then it has been like this big sandbox. There was always something interesting to do there, ”said Ina.
