Years before Chris Columbus brought the magic of the Harry Potter to life, he directed another pair of films that would be magical for millions of people. Home on their own and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York has been a Christmas cult film that has entertained people of all ages for decades. Featuring a star-studded crew, hilarious hijinks, and stunning writing, the films are a Christmas staple for many.
Home on their own It first stole hearts in 1990 and became the feature film at the box office opening weekend. The film told the story of Kevin McCallister (played by Macaulay Culkin) and his extended family. After Kevin enters into a heated argument with his family about pizza, he is thrown out into the attic for the rest of the evening. When morning arrives, his family accidentally leaves him behind to catch their plane to Paris, France.
‘Home Alone’ is considered a classic Christmas movie
While Kevin is thrilled to find out that he is home alone at first, things get complicated when two burglars, known as the Wet Bandits, plan to steal his family ‘s home. With the phone lines down and most of his neighbors traveling for the holiday season, Kevin really has no one to turn to for protection. However, Kevin wants to protect his home and installs a system of booby traps to prevent the burgers from invading his home.
The team repeated their place in the sequel
After success Home on their own, Columbus chose to make a sequel next year. The whole team signed up Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and the sequel also thrives in a box office. In the sequel, Kevin is not technically left at home. Instead, he unknowingly boards the wrong flight and is left to face the dangers of New York alone. Unfortunately for Kevin, the Wet Bandits have escaped from prison and want revenge before escaping.
What made the films so good?
Part of what makes both films so funny and successful is the dynamic team. Fans tend to be particularly amused by Kevin’s relationship with his sisters, cousins, and parents. Home on their own paints a very funny relationship between Kevin and his older brother, Buzz. Plus, Kevin’s clear disdain for Frank’s uncle and his cheapness always deliver humor.
Of course, there were no family dynamics when the cameras were on. In fact, there are two members of the Home on their own cast is indeed a relative. Fortunately, they play cousins, rather than brothers / sisters, in the movies. Fans will remember that Kevin chooses to sleep in the attic because he does not want to sleep on the leather-with-bed sofa with his cousin, Fuller. Fuller’s habit, of course, is to wet the bed and Kevin doesn’t want to take the risk of being peed on.
Which ‘Home Alone’ hunting members are really related?
Fuller is played by Kieran Culkin, MacAulay’s younger brother. The brothers are only two years apart in age and both gave good performances in the Home on their own movies. If you want the sisters to interact on screen, both movies are currently streaming on Disney +
