Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor were closely related. As two of Hollywood ‘s most famous actors, they often spent time together in the 1950s. The relationship grew closer when the women married best friends Eddie Fisher and Michael Todd, respectively.
After Todd died in 1958, Fisher Reynolds left to comfort Taylor. The act led to one of the biggest scandals in Hollywood and damaged Reynolds and Taylor’s friendship.
Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor went to high school together
Reynolds and Taylor both signed a contract with Metro studio Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) when they were teenagers. In an interview with People, Reynolds explained that her career began after Taylor already became a star. The Singin in the Rain the actor remembered being happy to be in the same room as Taylor at the time.
“I went to MGM when I was about 17, and Liz was there too, but she was already a star,” Reynolds said, just a year before she died. “We went to school together on the lottery, when it was between films. I was just a beginner, and she and I weren’t in any way alike, but we got on well because I was scared to go to school with Elizabeth Taylor. And if anyone said no, they were lying. No blind. ”
Taylor apparently felt guilty about the problem decades later. In his 2018 commemoration, My Girls: A lifetime with Carrie and Debbie, Todd Fisher said Taylor apologized for her part in the Reynolds divorce on September 11, 2001. It so happened that the two actors were in New York for Michael Jackson’s concert the day before. Reynolds got stuck in her hotel room when Taylor suggested they stay together. Several days later, Taylor Reynolds flew on a private plane so she could play in California. When she arrived at her show, Reynolds praised Taylor for being thoughtful, per Good housekeeping.
“I guess that makes up for the Eddie thing,” Reynolds joked on stage, referring to Taylor.
