Winona Ryder and Christian Slater described “teen angst bullsh * t” in the 1988 cult film Heaters. In the film, Ryder plays Veronica Sawyer, a popular girl who is bitterly disgusted with her bad, superficial friends – all named Heather. She begins a romance with the bad boy JD Dean (Slater), the new boy in town whose terrorist climb expands into a cold-blooded murder.
Slater and Ryder made a strong pair on screen, but was the pair ever in real life? The two actors were never a bad subject – partly because Slater was going back a different ball from the movie. But Ryder has admitted he badly crushed her co-star.
Christian Slater was dating ‘Heathers’ co-star Kim Walker
Slater was 19 when he did Heaters, leaving him a few years older than Ryder who was 16-years-old at the time and some of his other co-stars. While filming, he was a bit “aloof,” said Shannen Doherty – played by Heather Duke Weekly entertainment for oral history 2014 the magazine of the film.
“I barely knew a Christian. He was always in his trailer or smoking cigarettes, ”said Lisanne Falk, played by Heather McNamara.
At the time of filming, Slater was dating Kim Walker. She played Heather Chandler, the director of the Heathers and the first character to die in the film, after accidentally dropping a mug full of Drano.
Slater’s girlfriend was not the first choice for a short but memorable Heather Chandler role. Director Michael Lehmann had asked Heather Graham for the part, but she refused. But Graham’s mother at the time was worried about the content of the film and Walker got the job instead. (Interestingly, the JD part almost went to Brad Pitt at the time, according to ScreenRant, while Jennifer Connelly took over Veronica.)
Ryder says she defeated Slater
While Slater was dating Walker, Ryder has certainly said she had feelings for her co-star. But she says the two never went.
“We never went out! He was dating Kim Walker. And I was, like, such as a lot of pressure on him, ”she told EW.
Apparently, the feeling was mutual. The pair tried even so far after Slater split from Walker, but it didn’t work out.
“It’s funny, the last time I watched the film, I was like, ‘God, we have great chemistry! ‘And I wonder if it was partly related to the fact that, you know, me wishing I could, ”said Ryder, adding that the two have tried“ once or twice ”so far,“ but there was always a kind of drama. ”
Slater sent some mixed signals to Ryder
Ryder says she and Slater kept things completely professional until after they were done working Heaters.
“Nothing happened until after the film.
The Strange things A star admitted she was a bit naive when it came to guys, explaining that her mother had to sit down to discuss relationships.
“I felt really close,” Ryder said. “Maybe it’s because – I say – I was a maiden. I remember getting the speech from my mother: ‘When you make out with someone, that doesn’t mean they are your girlfriend. ‘I was like,’ Really? ‘
“I was always trying to figure out if we were going back, and he wouldn’t answer me at all,” she said.
As for Slater, he apparently never forgot over his romance – which Ryder never did.
“I love her. I never got over the crush on her then,” he told the UK Independent newspaper in 2007 (via New Zealand Herald). “She is still the woman of my dreams.”
