Debbie Reynolds Almost Changed Her Mind About Forgiving Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor’s relationship with Eddie Fisher almost ended her relationship with Debbie Reynolds forever. Reynolds and Fisher were married with two children (Star Wars the legend of Carrie Fisher and Todd Fisher) when her husband left her for her best friend, and the actors didn’t talk to each other for years because of her.

One terrible day – long after the two women separated from Fisher – Reynolds and Taylor were on the same voyage and ended up settling. But Reynolds almost let it happen.

Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor were on the same voyage in 1966

Reynolds and Taylor have been married several times. In fact, Taylor was as famous for her many marriages as she was for her acting. The Cleopatra the star married eight times in her lifetime to seven men. She married and divorced Richard Burton, i Cleopatra co-star, twice. As for Reynolds, she married three times. She was remarried to Harry Karl in 1960.

In 1966, Reynolds and Taylor both met Queen Elizabeth on the same transatlantic voyage to Europe. Reynolds was married to Karl at the time, and Taylor to Burton. The women had not been friends from the “insane tabloid feeding frenzy” that was Fisher’s love triangle, and the two had publicly covered each other in the media a few years ago. Suffice it to say that being locked up on the same cruise ship for several days was not a dream vacation.

Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor drank together after reconciling

Reynolds had never blamed Taylor for abandoning their family. She felt “you can’t make someone go, you can’t make them do something they don’t want to do. ”

“He wanted to be his girlfriend, so he left and he was,” she said. “He was himself. She gave him what he wanted. ”

But she still wanted to find out how Taylor could hurt so much. In fact, they had been close friends since high school.

“She came to the living room and we had drinks, and we had dinner together,” Reynolds recalled their cruise ship meeting. She noted that no real apology was given in this exchange, but Taylor admitted that her relationship with Fisher was wrong.

“At that time, in my cabin, before we went to dinner, we both did a little [amends]. I said, ‘Why in the world would you want it anyway?’ She said, ‘Well, I don’t know why I did it, and I was certainly wrong. But look what I have now! ”Reynolds said. “I said, ‘Well, lucky you!’ And that’s how that got over it. ”

Decades later, on set Those old Broads in 2000, Taylor unexpectedly apologized to Reynolds, her co – star of the film. The excuse, as Todd wrote in his 2018 memoir My Girls, without motivation and without tears.
