‘Dawson’s Creek’: How Much Older Was Scott Foley (Cliff) Than Michelle Williams (Jen) in Season 1?

Like many layers of the time, the hit show ’90s-’00s Dawson’s Creek often employing 20-somethings to feature teenage characters. But that wasn’t true for all actors, leading to an occasional age gap in those who played love interests. Read on to learn about one such example.

Michelle Williams broke out as one of his four young stars Dawson’s Creek. She photographed Jen Lindley, a high school student who moves to Capeside, Massachusetts, from New York City in the pilot. Jen immediately grabs the attention of her neighbor, Dawson Leery, and befriends him, leading to romance again, again and again.

Dawson’s CreekWilliams ran, Williams made a handful of films. But it wasn’t until the 2005 drama hit Brokeback Mountain that she was a huge success, getting her first Oscar nomination. She has since won three more, as well as an Emmy for her roles in the 2019 limited series Fosse / Verdon.

Scott Foley showed her love interest, Cliff Elliot, in Season 1

While Dawson and Jen immediately became interested in each other, their romance took some time to begin with. Before it started, she went to a dance with Cliff Elliot, a senior. As well as being jealous, Dawson doesn’t like Cliff because he’s in charge of the film class project, and Dawson sees him as a boring jock.

At the dance, Dawson confronts Jen. Soon after, they start hanging out and sharing their first kiss. They go back for a short time, but their first time at a relationship ends after just a few moments. Jen then goes back to Cliff, but she’s not very interested in him. She finishes things with him after a date or two.

Foley left ‘Dawson’s Creek’ for another WB show

Scott Foley, who features Cliff, was only in five episodes of Dawson’s Creek Season 1: “Dance,” “Kiss,” “Boyfriend,” “Double Date,” and “The Care.” A couple of times later, the season came to an end, and while season 2 also takes place in the sophomore year of the main characters, Cliff isn’t around.

While there was little reason for the character to come back, it looks like Foley would have been too busy if he had asked to return. He was thrown in the lead role of college student Noel Crane in Felicity, another WB adult drama series which began in September 1998 with Dawson’s Creek Season 2.

How old were Foley and Williams when they worked together?

Dawson’s Creek Season 1 was filmed in 1997. Then still a relatively unknown actor, Foley turned 25 in June of that year, so he played much younger both that series and Felicity. Williams, on her other hand, started as a teenager, just 16 or 17 years old when they filmed the scenes together.

While Foley was old enough to play high school student, Williams ’youth was unique in its proximity to the true age of her characters. James Van Der Beek (Dawson) was 20 when they started filming, and Joshua Jackson (Pacey) and Katie Holmes (Joey) were 18.
