‘Cherry’: Russo Brothers Reveal Why They Chose Tom Holland for This Dark Role

Cherry coming from directors Anthony and Joe Russo and stars Tom Holland in the title role. The Russo brothers previously worked with the Dutch on three Marvel Cinematic Universe films. But there’s a particular reason they chose him to play this new dark role.

‘Cherry’ is based on a book

Cherry is a variation of Nico Walker’s 2018 novel of the same name. The book follows the life story of a man who dropped out of college to join the U.S. Army. After serving in the Iraq War, the soldier becomes addicted to opioids and starts robbing banks.

Anthony and Joe’s younger sister, Angela Russo-Otstot, transformed the novel into a screenplay. In an interview with Variety, the Russo brothers revealed that they asked Angela to write the script because they knew she could capture the depth and nuance of the story.

“Our family has experienced opioids,” Anthony said. “It simply came to our notice then. It has been complicated and personal because it felt so close to home. I think that’s one reason we went into our big brother mode with Angela and we basically said, ‘here, write this. ‘”

“We knew she also understood it in a very personal way,” he continued. “This is certainly her most exciting collaboration yet.”

This is a very different role for Tom Holland

The Dutch are famous for playing the sweet and friendly Spider-Man neighborhood in the MCU. He worked with the Russo Brothers on three films – Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

While Cherry Holland ‘s first amazing career isn’t one of his darkest. He reappeared before The impossible, In the Heart of the Sea, and Lost City Z.. And most recently, he was in the Netflix thrush, Satan all the time.

The Russo brothers explain why they chose Tom Holland for ‘Cherry’

For the Dutch, going from playing a superhero cutter cookie to showing a criminal addict vet is a good leap. But in their conversation with Variety, the Russo brothers revealed that they chose Holland for the film because of his great acting talent.

“I didn’t even know Joe and I wanted to promise to make the film at all until we thought about Tom in the role,” Anthony explained. “The book is dark, complex and that is its value. We wanted to make this film because it deals with relevant and current issues dealing with opioid addiction that are linked to military experience, contemporary military knowledge. ”

“We wanted to make a version of the film that was enjoyable, not like taking your medicine,” he said. “Tom is so capable. He’s such an attractive actor, and so good. As soon as we started thinking about him as a character, the whole film opened up to us as an opportunity because he was our path to an accessible, interesting, enjoyable version of a challenging film. ”

Cherry target theaters on Feb. 26. It will start streaming on Apple TV + on March 12th.
