Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten’s Raspberry Baked French Toast Recipe Is the Perfect Christmas Breakfast

If the French toast recipe isn’t in the appealing casserole style, Garten also has a more traditional recipe made by challah or brioche bread with one or two added ingredients that make it just a little more special. She recommends using half and half milk instead of “if you really want to be above the standard. ”


  • 6 more eggs
  • 1½ half and half cups or milk
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • ½ teaspoon real vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 large loaf of challah or brioche bread
  • Odorless butter
  • Vegetable oil

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

Whisk the eggs, half and half or milk, orange juice, honey, vanilla, and salt together in a shallow dish. Dip the slices of the bread, cut ¾ inches thick, and soak in the egg mixture for a few minutes, turning over to coat on all sides.

“The longer you travel it and the bread dryer is, the better,” said Garten. Contessa barefooted.

Heat a tablespoon of butter and a tablespoon of oil in a pan over medium heat, then add the bread, cook 3 minutes on each side, until browned. As you cook the French toast, place it on a leaf pan and place in the oven to keep warm while you cook the remaining bread slices.

Serve with maple syrup, sugar sweetener, or fruit.
